Professor Stephanie Hemelryk Donald studied Chinese Studies (BA Hons) at the University of Oxford, Theatre at the Drama Studio in London, Culture and Politics in Contemporary Europe (MA) at the University of Southampton, and Media Studies (DPhil) at the University of Sussex. She worked in Britain in theatre, radio and animation during the 1980s and early 1990s. Her research focuses on the social and political impact and import of visual politics, with specific interests in film, children's media, gendered experience, China and internationalisation. Recent research projects have focussed on film and city branding on the West Pacific Rim, educational change and creativity, and children's film cultures. Current work examines the cultural articulation of new class structures in global contexts (particularly urban China), organisational histories of Australian Muslim women, small (mobile) screens and socialisation amongst Australian and Asian youth, and grounded cosmopolitanism in the Asia Pacific. She is a member of the UTS China Research Group.
